Annapolis is synonymous with the United States Naval Academy, located just beyond downtown at the confluence of the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay.
Founded in 1845, the Naval Academy's 4,300 students are known as Midshipmen. Entry into the Naval Academy occurs primrily by appointment from members of Congress or the Secretary of the Navy.
One of this country's most prestigious schools of higher learning, it is not surprising that its alumni reads like a Who's Who of American History. Among Naval Academy alumni are more than 50 astronauts (seven of whom went to the moon), 73 Medal of Honor recipients, 46 Rhodes Scholars, two Nobel Prize winners, and one president (Jimmy Carter).
