Just down the road from Mount Airy - the boyhood home of Andy Griffith - Pilot Mountain is believed to be the inspiration of the fictional town of Mt. Pilot on the Andy Griffith Show. Mayberry, just 12 miles away, always aspired to be Mt. Pilot, seen as larger and more sophisticated.
Without question, the most famous residents of Mt. Pilot were the "Fun Girls" - Daphne and Skippy. The duo made three appearances on the show and each time managed to keep Barney flummoxed and Andy downright irritated. One of the show's funniest episodes is presented below in its entirety with the "Fun Girls" making their appearance at the seven and a half minute mark.
