Near the mouth of the Mississippi River lies America's most unique city -- New Orleans, Louisiana. One of this country's oldest cities, New Orleans has an identifiable French sophistication but is heavily influenced by the cultures of countries throughout the world. The city was established under French rule in 1718 as "Nouvelle-Orléans" and over the next century immigrants from Spain, England, Africa, Germany, Ireland, and the islands of the Caribbean swelled the city's population and began establishing its fascinating culture.
