The orange and white checkerboard endzone was also intro-
duced in the 1960s by Coach Doug Dickey before being elim-
inated when Astro-Turf was installed in 1968.  As athletic
director, Dickey brought the checkerboard end zone back in 1989.
It is a much loved Big Orange tradition and a staple of broadcaster
Bob Kesling's touchdown call "...he takes it to the checkerboard!"
